Reasons why you need a UPS

upsI was working in a school today and we had two power outages lasting about 5 minutes each.  This meant resetting the server, the network switches and ensuing that the wireless devices were all up and running.

I am recommending that the school invests in an Uniteruptable Power Supply (UPS) device for the server and maybe even the admin machines.

Here are my top reasons for buying a UPS device:

  1. 90% of all companies that experience a computer "disaster" and have no survival plan, go out of business within 18 months.  (Source: Price Waterhouse).
  2. 28% of all computer system breakdowns are caused by power failures (Source: National Computing Center)

  3. A recent survey of 450 leading companies showed that on average they suffer from 6 computer failures a year. This means loss of productivity whilst replacement systems are installed.

  4. The re-inputting of data that was lost when the power went can take days, weeks, or even months. Sometimes data is lost forever.

  5. According to IBM, other issues could include:
  • Loss of business/customers
  • Cash flow problems
  • Inability to run payroll
  • Loss of operational data
  • Loss of customer account management
  • Loss of goodwill
  • Deterioration of customer service
  • Backlog of work
  • Loss of production
  • Financial loss
  • Loss of financial control

A UPS device can be bought from around #50.  Here is one we recommend from Amazon: APC SC620I Smart-UPS 620VA 390W

With snow, wind and general bad weather on its way - now is the time to buy before disaster strikes!
