Spring Cleaning? Don't forget the computer! Dust can cause overheating, component damage and fires! |
Over time, your computers are going to attract dust, fluff and other airbound debris. If you allow this to build up, your computer will overheat and in extreme cases, catch fire. Dust is an insulator of heat. If your computer looks like the images opposite, you are dramatically reducing its life span. The blanket of dust raises the temperature of the internal components, stops the fan working and prevents heat escaping. The photographs in this article were taken today. The computer in question was shutting down after about an hours use... after opening the case, we discovered why! This computer was around 4 years old and is used for around 6 hours per day. If you've had your computer for more than six months there will be some level of dust building up inside that needs to be dealt with. We recommend cleaning your computer around every 6-12 months. To clean your computer, first remove the computer from the power supply and disconnect all cables to the monitor, keyboard, mouse and any other devices. It is advisable to take the computer outside to clean and wear old clothes and a dust mask. Remove the side cover(s) and the front panel if it is detachable. Using a can of compressed air (never use a vacuum cleaner) blow the dust from the fans, the heatsink, the power supply, the front and rear vents and everywhere else that dust has settled. Don't fancy this dirty job? Contact us below. Prices start at £35 for up to 5 Computers.

To follow on from yesterday's blog post, I have received another two Who's Who emails: 2012 Edition of The Biltmore Who's Who. Executive Director from Executive-Ventures.com Interestingly, the domain www.executive-ventures.com was only registered yesterday (04/04/2012)! We all work hard and like to be recognised, but remember these are vanity scams so don't sign up... unfortunately, fame does come at a price with these scams! I have reported all three scam to Action Fraud and to phishing@cityoflondon.police.uk
For reference, here are the emails:

I should have been working in Heanor today, but am snowed in at the moment, so working on a Data Recovery job instead. The laptop hard disk looks completely dead, but we are trying our best to get some important data back. We are good at recovering data from CDs, DVDs, Hard Drives, Camcorders, Memory Cards etc but data recovery is a last resort. We cannot stress the importance of doing backups. As mentioned in previous entries ensure you are backing up data on a regular basis as hard drives are mechanical and everything mechanical will break at some point. We use Dropbox to store important files online and can access these from any computer. You can sign up and get 2GB for free, so what are you wating for? Click here to sign up. No comments

I haven't posted on my blog for a little while due to work commitments, but thought I would share this little gem...

I have removed the links for security purposes. If you get this email, do not click - it is called a vanity scam. There is no charge for the entry, but you are handing over your contact details. They will put you on a "sucker" list and try to sell you future products, inclucing a copy of this worthless "Who's Who" book. The links in the email take you through to a website which was only registered in November 2011. You are asked to validate personal information which can be included in the fraudulent directory, sold to other marketing firms or used in future attacks such as phishing emails. After "validating" your details you will probably be "interviewed". The interview often takes the form of a telephone conversation or a web form claiming it is to verify the target's qualifications. Once the personal information has been gathered, the next goal is to acquire the target's credit card number. The target is congratulated as having passed the interview, and then asked to provide a credit card number to finalise the process, buy the book or pay for a certificate.
Good luck and be careful... don't pay for inclusion in a Who's Who book that no one reads! No comments

Today, I am helping launch the carreers of around 50 budding entrepreneurs - I am judging presentations for the Young Enterprise Company Programme. The Company Programme takes places over a school year and see's the young achievers:
raise real finance by selling shares, open and use their own company bank account, carry out market research, work together to create their business plan, develop their own product or service, market and promote their product or service, trade with the public, manage the company finances, take part in local Young Enterprise trade fairs, compete with other schools and colleges in the company of the year competition.
I have been involved in Young Enterprise for around 12 years, acting as a Business Advisor, Board Member and more recently a judge at the Trade Fair and Interim Presentations. Young people get a lot of bad press, but programmes such as Young Enterprise help them develop skills that can be transferred into employment and in some cases self-employment. If you would like to get involved and help shape the lives of the next generation, contact: Lynda Oliver
